On the subject of
reflections_2...
Apr. 30th, 2005 11:41 amFirst things first.
Yes, I did finally get round to uploading that drabble to FF.net. And I even managed to come up with a name for the collection! *cue speshulness*
Kioku
For those of you who are actually interested (i.e. no one) "kioku" means memory, recollection or remembrance. Yes, I couldn't think of a good English title so I decided to play with the Japanese/English dictionary instead. :p
And now for the main subject of this post:
Well, my
reflections_2 essay will be due on Tuesday 3rd May. I'm not too worried about managing to finish it on time since I've pretty much sorted out everything that I want to write and am currently in the process of getting it all typed up (one of the few things that I can do fairly quickly). However, it would be nice to have a beta-reader to look through my ramblings before I post them on the community. If everyone's busy then that's not a problem but if you're willing to take a look then I'll e-mail the MS Word version to you. I'm trying to get the whole thing finished by Monday night (thank God for Bank Holidays) so I'll be able to make any necessary last minute changes before posting it.
Those of you who are already members of
reflections_2 will probably know that I'm busy writing a character essay on Jakotsu from Inuyasha. I'll admit that a good deal of my motivation for writing this comes from bad fanfiction. However, that criteria also applies to at least 95% of pretty much all the character essays I've ever read and doesn't seem to have any direct correlation with the quality of their content, so I guess I'm justified. >)
This essay does deal with some potentially squicky subject matter. If you're likely to be squicked by explanations of subjects such as the pyschology behind sadism(although I'm not really going into graphic detail) then it's probably advisable not to read it.
The main things I'm concerned about are:
1. Coherency
I'm aiming for an essay that both die-hard Inuyasha fans and those who have never even heard of the series (so how has the weather been on Mars for the last 3 years?) will be able to follow and (hopefully) get something out of. Please stop me if I'm just plain not making sense.
2. Characterization and canon
I've been careful not to type anything that I feel I can't back up with canon evidence, with the exception of some speculation on my part (which is clearly labeled as such), which hopefully has some sort of believable basis in canon. If my arguments sound weak or you happen to think that canon doesn't back what I'm saying then please point this out. However, I will ask for canon evidence to back up your reasoning. (Yes, I'm opinionated but if you can come up with a *good* argument that contradicts mine then I'm willing to listen to it.)
3. Resisting the urge to snark
This was probably one of the hardest parts of writing the essay, along with coming up with some kind of actual structure and the lack of background information about Jakotsu included in the series. Fanon stereotypes drive me insane and resisting a prime opportunity to poke a great deal of fun at them was *hard*. Since this is supposed to be a fairly objective essay too much snarking is *not* appropriate, no matter how tempting it may be.
OK, that's that done. If nothing else, I can probably be sure that people will at least know the difference between a sadist, sadomasochist, serial rapist and a necrophiliac by the time they've finished reading it. >)
